1 credit: a standard SMS (up to 160 characters) to one contact.
2+ credits: longer texts. Carriers split long messages into segments (~153 characters each), and each segment is a credit. The composer shows the exact count as you type.
3 credits: an MMS (picture or video message).
So texting a 500-person list one standard message costs 500 credits. If you use name personalization, each person's message is billed on its own actual length, you're never rounded up as a group.
